Commissioner Craddick on how she chose her top 4 reads:

The City by Dean Koontz

A story of a young boy, a musical prodigy, who along with his best friend who is also musically gifted, find themselves on a collision course with killers who are about to unleash anarchy.  The child’s remarkable family is tested by the extremes of evil, but bound by the depths of love, which weave a most unforgettable story.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

An amazing story of the life-changing, seemingly minor actions of a 13 year old boy, Theo and how his decisions, or was it his fate, led him ultimately to contemplate upon his life’s trajectory. The Goldfinch and the lives of those who loved, saved and looked after beautiful things were a reflection of his life experiences that resulted from sorrow, survival, beauty and obsession.

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

An inspiring story of two strong, smart women fighting the barriers society has placed on them. Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, this book gives you a window into what the American woman has had the power to overcome. I found it to be an empowering read that made me thankful for women like Sarah and Hetty that struggled, persevered and fought for the freedom and rights we have today.

Act of War by Brad Thor

A true thriller unfolds with the mysterious death of a CIA agent overseas. When his top asset surfaces with a startling and terrifying claim, no one knows if she can be trusted. Six exchange students go missing, two airplane passengers trade places, and one political-asylum seeker is arrested, and a deadly chain of events is set in motion. With the United States facing an imminent and devastating attack, America’s new president turns to a covert counterterrorism operative to help carry out the most dangerous operations in the country’s history.

In addition to these books, my every day read is the Bible. Reading the Bible each day restores hope and provides valuable life lessons for me as an individual and as a mother.
